I hate the post office.

March 31, 2003 on 5:04 pm | In Life Updates, Modern Technology

We sent all our taxes out March 14th. Each one was sent Certified Mail.

Each one arrived at its destination — save one. One of our packages reports “No further information is available” after it was initially scanned at the departure post office.

The Post Office wouldn’t deal with it until today, since a certain amount of time had to pass. I spent fifteen minutes on the phone with a mental giant at the Post Office’s national phone number. Just as we were completing my case report and blah blah blah, their “system” went “down.” He suggested I call again in a few hours, in case my information wasn’t entered successfully.

I hate the post office.

  • People are funny

March 29, 2003 on 12:32 am | In Things of Amusement to Me

Sometimes, people I don’t expect to be funny… are funny. Tim Allen was a famous example, but I’m really talking about less-famous people whom I know, or know of, and that they are amusing comes as a shock to me.

Brent Simmons wrote NetNewsWatcher, a gem of a program for OS X that serves as a beautiful and well-functioning RSS reader. He’s a programmer, a geek, and all those things. And he’s funny.

This article on the Three Dog Night song “Joy to the World” is funny.

This article, on blogging and humor, is funnier. It also happens to contain adult language and partial nudity. Viewer discretion — MOM — is strongly advised.

“With France like this, who needs enemies?”

I said that to Seth (of Leth & Sex fame) today, and he wasn’t as amused as he should have been. You, dear reader, must now be doubly amused.

NBC moved Ed to Friday nights, from the prime pre-West Wing slot it held on Wednesdays @ 8pm.

    Too bad.

Now I have to violate the holy Jewish Sabbath to watch one of the top three hour-long comedies currently on file. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gilmore Girls, to answer your question.)

Why did they move Ed? I don’t know. I do know that ABC moved The Practice from Sundays (television’s most-watched night) to Monday purposefully — to LOWER overall viewership.

(That’s not gossip — it’s fact. ABC could pay less for the show by decreasing its audience, but not sacrifice too much on advertising revenue.)

So why did NBC move Ed to Fridays? Do they think Jews aren’t worth advertising to, because they don’t buy things? (Note to Pat Buchanan: Don’t answer that.)

  • What a job.

Dave Barry already has a cool job. This job was, in my view, about 750% cooler than his day job.

CNN quotes some of Steve Martin’s best lines:
“Well, I’m glad they cut back on all the glitz,” he said during his opening monologue. “You probably noticed there was no fancy red carpet tonight. That‘ll send them a message.”

Martin also got off digs at large corporations, the “gay Mafia,” Jack Nicholson, Mickey Rooney and Kathy Bates. “Jack Nicholson was in a hot tub with Kathy Bates,” Martin said, referring to a scene in the film “About Schmidt,” “but then, who hasn’t been?”

Later, Martin described what it took to be a movie star. “They can be tall or short, thin or skinny,” he said. “They can be Democrats, or …” he paused, his voice trailing off, “or skinny.”

I only wrote Steve one joke, but he didn’t use it. This may or may not have been because he is not telepathic.

    Wow.

In some countries — not ours, of course not, enemies! — that weapon could be deadly without killing.

A CNN poll found that 51% of Americans believe Saddam Hussein is responsible for the September 11th attacks.

    That’s stupid.

As this article (which my father and brother-in-law will hate) points out, that’s a stupid attempt by stupid people to rationalize a war.

Why isn’t North Korea — official motto, “HELL YEAH WE DO HAVE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, WE CAN HIT YOUR WEST COAST, WE HATE YOU, NYAHH NYAHH NYAHH” — our current target? I think it’s a bit hypocritical to give a heavier punishment to the guy who pleads Not Guilty than the guy who pleads Guilty with no remorse.
