SAMFund

January 30, 2004 on 10:10 pm | In Good Stories, Life Updates

Do you like good causes? Me too.

I would like you to donate to The SAMFund. The SAMFund is a non profit that seeks to help out in the lives of young adult cancer survivors. It’s all about Surving and Moving Forward.

My friend Sam is the founder.

You can donate from their web page by printing out a form, or you could go directly via PayPal by clicking this link:

Once you’ve sent in your tax-deductible donation, feel free to email me (here). In a couple weeks, I’ll post how much The Lex Files raised for this excellent cause. You could donate just $5; they’ll be happy to take it. Ain’t no one who finds my blog funny who can’t afford five bucks.

I gave $50 with my sister Abbi through our Don’t Think Small account, and another $50 from my own wallet. That’s a lot for me, but I’ll sleep better tonight without that money.

There are very few things this blog is 100% serious about. This is one of those things.

Through Steve Silver, I found The 100 Biggest Business Blunders of 2003.

The stories go something like this. “Company X renamed its ‘Floober’ product to ‘Non-Cancer Causing Floober.’ Leaked memos now show that the company changed the product name after learning that Floober actually causes AIDS. Company X CEO Jimmy Jerkface could not be reached for comment, because he was busy beating up old women while laying off workers and embezzling company funds for to fund his crack habit.”

From my crazy Cousin Joe comes this test to see which candidate matches your own views the best on an assortment of issues.

I matched one candidate’s views 100%. Who does it pick for you? Or whom? Or whom is on first?

The coolest moment of John Kerry’s victory speech tonight was when he said, “If I’m President…” and the crowd began a chant of: “When! When! When!”

Lauren commented that people running for President must get pretty full of themselves after awhile. Of course, she wasn’t thinking of Dennis Kucinich at the time.

Why did NBC’s tag at the end of tonight’s Ed indicate that there were only two episodes left of this show? Why would Ed be ending? And why are there no news stories about the cancellation?

Credit goes to Jake Rubin for today’s link: It’s an official White House transcript of a Bush press conference from yesterday.

    It is funny.

  • Bird poopy.

January 19, 2004 on 5:02 pm | In Family, Good Stories

A few weeks back, I went to Disneyland with Lauren and my in-laws. The park, you’ll recall, was swamped that day.

The birds at Disney parks become tamed as a by-product of many people who don’t constantly threaten their (the birds) lives, and who drop delicious funnel cake and cotton candy on the ground where the birds can eat it.

The birds fly low and close to the park visitors.

Lauren’s mom Esther has an unfortunate history; twice in the past birds have seen her head like in that Gary Larson cartoon — as a target for pooping.

As a sort-of joke, Esther draped her jacket over her head when a flock of birds made a swooping arc above us in the Magic Kingdom. Not surprising, given her history.

When the birds had passed and she lowered the jacket, it was her husband’s job to clean up the bird poopy that, unbelievably, had been deposited there.

Bird poopy is gooey and disgusting. Esther didn’t expect to see poop with such consistency with such consistency. (Get it?! HA!)

I mention this bird crap story to honor the pathetic showing of crap from the Philadelphia Eagles, my once and future favorite birds of play, over the weekend.

  • Who Needs Sleep?

January 18, 2004 on 11:31 pm | In Charlie, Lauren, Modern Technology

    NOT:
    * My computer. It’s been on for one month as of today, with nary a single crash. I’m about to restart, just because it feels right. Plus, I’d like to restart my 7 permitted LaunchBar launch-count (yes, it’s shareware, and yes, I’m too cheap to register).

YES, OR SOME OTHER EQUIVALENT OPPOSITE OF ‘NOT’:
    * Lauren. She fell asleep last night around 10pm, woke up this morning to walk Charlie, and promptly settled into the couch with Charlie and a cookbook (not some Thai doggie cookbook, a chicken-themed cookbook) — where she napped for two or three hours.
