PulpFiction

Freshly Squeezed Software released a new OS X news aggregator today, called PulpFiction. I downloaded the “Lite” (free) version first, to check it out without any “pay for me!” nags.

At this writing, the “Lite” version has a bug where, namely, importing your subscriptions (from an OPML file) doesn’t work. I reported it to Erik, who promises a fix tonight — one that won’t even increment the version from 1.0.

I’ve tried out the Pro version now, in addition to the Lite version. Notes on both:

Deleting multiple folders is SLOW. Like, inhumanly slow. Beach ball of death becomes your new best friend slow.

I click on “Inbox,” which should show all of my “stories” or “articles” or whatever they’re called. It takes about 5 seconds for the window to draw. I have 70 subscriptions.

Both the “Pro” and “Lite” versions keep telling me I have two new articles. But I can’t find them anywhere. No articles are marked new. I just moved everything to the trash, and now the 2 “new” article notification on my “Inbox” disappeared. But the Dock icon still reports two new ones.

On the upside… Moving columns in the normal “Articles” view is excellent. The columns move transparently and auto-resize the surrounding columns. It’s nice.

All Dive Into Mark articles show up as having been posted in 1969.

But right now, I’m gonna stick with NetNewsWire. Less buggy and faster. No doubt, in part, due to its increased maturity over newcomer PulpFiction. But that’s good enough for me! I’m sure I’ll read about the 2.0 release of PF, and I’ll check it out again.
