Snooze: False Alarm

February 27, 2005 on 2:03 am | In Uncategorized

On Thursday, I left for work before 8am. I came home at three. That is, 3am, Friday morning.

I was back in the office at 9:30am Friday morning, and made sure not to leave again at 3am. No, I left at 4am, today, Saturday.

It’s rather rare for me to be awake at those hours, but I continued to function pretty well.

(We’re working on a massive project with a massively unrealistic deadline.)

The first of my two very long days, two other employees where there to keep me company: Korri, a Product Manager, and Joe H., our esteemed Creative Director. I, of course, am the Web Developer. I like Korri and Joe H. (who is not to be confused with Joe P), so working extended hours with them is no problem.

Something happens when fun people rely on stamina and willpower to stay awake far too long. Especially when they’re working in a large — though empty and eerily quiet — office.

Namely, they get loony. In fact, before we were reduced to three — when Joel and Jeremy were still there — there was a candy fight, with miniature chocolate bars being heaved from cubicle to cubicle.

Before that had happened, we’d ordered Kosher Chinese food for all the “late” workers (most of whom left at the ridiculously early hour of 9pm), and Korri had hatched an elaborate plan where she’d yell to Joe H while he ordered the food on the phone, so that Joe H could holler back at her in Chinese, to show the staff that he spoke Chinese, with the hollering being the way to do so since he couldn’t speak Chinese well enough to order the food itself. Confused? Good.

At any rate, we got a lot of work done Thursday into Friday, but we knew there’d be a lot more to get done by end of day Friday. As we prepared to leave early Friday morning, Joe H mentioned that he thought it would be rather difficult to make it to the daily 10am group meeting that’s being held daily for the duration of this project.

Oh no, Korri insisted. Friday’s 10am meeting would be hugely important, what the the Friday deadline we were racing and all. If there were ever a 10am meeting Joe H and I needed to attend at all costs, this was it!

So, as I mentioned, I was at work Friday by 9:30am. Joe H arrived shortly thereafter.

At 10:30, Korri realized for just how long she had been pounding the snooze button since her alarm had first gone off.

Joe H and I will never, ever let it go.

I love three day weekends. It takes the pressure off Friday and Saturday when you know that you can stay up late on Sunday as well.

Whoever decided that the “normal” work week should be five days, and the weekend two — well, that person was good for Capitalism, but lousy for Fun.

I don’t know what the hell is up with Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Girl schedule.

Lauren’s episode had previously been listed for March 23rd and following. Now, it’s not. And the “Casting Special” is now “Meet the Gal Pals.”

No word on Lauren’s episode’s new air date.

They Might Be Giants have released a new children’s album called “Here Come the ABCs.”

They performed a song from the album — Alphabet of Nations” — earlier this week on Conan O’Brien’s show.

The song is really just a listing of nations, in alphabetical order:

    Algeria, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Dominca… etc.

But I had only heard the song one night when it got stuck in my head the next morning.

    “Algeria, Bulgaria…”

My head stopped providing the lyrics at that moment. But I wanted to continue singing! So I improvised:

    Algeria, Bulgaria
    Chlamydia, Tony Danza
    Ebert, Folgers, Garages
    Highways, I-Ways, Jy-ways, Ky-ways
    Lex, Money, Neptune

That was as far as I improved this morning. Then I kept repeating it over and over.

    Algeria, Bulgaria
    Chlamydia, Tony Danza
    Ebert, Folgers, Garages
    Highways, I-Ways, Jy-ways, Ky-ways
    Lex, Money, Neptune

    In my head. ALL DAY.

    Two-finger trackpad scrolling is cool.

I like the “iPod Scrollwheel” method. Basically, I install the new trackpad driver on my iBook, and I can vertically scroll long documents by using two fingers on the trackpad, moving clockwise or counterclockwise.

    Neat.
