For me to coupon
May 31, 2005 on 4:41 am | In UncategorizedLauren and I get the Sunday LA Times.
We don’t, however, read the Sunday LA Times. Nor do we read the Saturday LA Times, which we subscribe to only because it’s cheaper to get both weekend papers than just one, which makes no sense.
But we read all of our news online. The Sunday Los Angeles times is simply our #1 coupon source.
I love coupons. Particularly because we frequent Pavillions, an offshoot of Vons, which does the magical double coupon thing. (Sadly, coupons that would end up getting you paid to take home a product don’t get the double coupon treatment.)
Today at Pavllions, after completing my Memorial Day shop, I went to the conveyor belt, loaded up my groceries, and placed my stack of coupons there as well.
Two of these coupons (one for 50¢ pre-doubling off Band-Aids, the other for 30¢ pre-doubling off olive oil) got sucked underneath the conveyor belt, which the cashier and I both witnessed.
Ms. Cashier looked me with a face that seemed to scream: “You are the world’s largest idiot. Your failure to realize that the top of your stack of coupons would get pulled underneath the conveyor belt. You’re a disappointment to the human race..”
She then pulled the handle and retrieved the sitting coupons. Other, older coupons were there as well.
Mrs. Cashier finished ringing me up. “Will you be needing any help out today, Mr. Fried Man?”
Ok. Maybe she shouldn’t need to know how to pronounce my last name based on how it appears on my credit card. But still — have you ever ever ever in your life met someone whose name was spelled as “Friedman” but pronounced “Fried man”?
No. So NOW who’s stupid, lady?
Fine. Both of us.
My Google
May 26, 2005 on 5:45 am | In UncategorizedYou may have heard that everyone’s favorite search engine released a customizable version of its home page.
So, you can get a Google search at the top, plus weather, movie listings, news, quote of the day, etc. below.
As a geek, I especially like the Javascript-y drag and drop you can use to move elements around on your customized page.
But, I think Google’s got to work on their RSS feed polling, because when I visited my Google home page for the first time today, here’s how my Slashdot news feed looked:

Sleeping on the floor in the dog house
May 22, 2005 on 3:16 pm | In UncategorizedThis past Thursday, Charlie underwent knee surgery to correct his luxating patella problem.
Exactly as described in several of those articles, Charlie was prancing merrily along, carrying off a newly-given treat, when he yelped in pain, froze, and began limping.
The eventual diagnosis was a kneecap with a propensity to slide out of place. This either caused, was caused by, or was exacerbated by a deformity — a curve in the lower bone of his leg.
I’m not a doctor, but I play one on my blog. As I understand it, which is vaguely, the surgeon deepens the groove to which the patella attaches, and recenters the patella at the same time. On occasion, the patella is intentionally attached slightly off-center to account for the malformed curving leg bone, but I don’t believe that was done for Mr. Charlie.
The visual effects are as follows:
• Charlie’s left side was shaved bare, exposing all the skin surrounding the leg. It looks, not surprisingly, just like a large chicken bone. They left the smallest tuft of hair on his left foot, giving a freakish poodle look.
• Charlie’s front leg has a small shaved patch where they inserted the IV.
• Charlie’s back right leg has a shaved area that is currently still hidden by a pain patch that we’re supposed to remove today. (It was described like a nicotine patch, but for pain. I have to presume it’s not exactly like a nicotine patch but for pain, thus shooting time-released pain into his leg. Perhaps calling it a pain medication patch would be better. Though less explicitly alliterative.)
• Charlie’s a licker. They don’t want him to (literally) lick his wounds. He wants to. The vet wins. Charlie’s wearing one of those ridiculous cone-shaped collars that prevents the dog from licking himself.
For Charlie, this is the absolute worst part of the process. Or, maybe, it’s tied with the gates and closed doors that prevent him from jumping up onto the sofa or bed.
He spends a lot of time twisted into convoluted positions, licking the inside of his cone head, but that’s as far as he can reach.
I spent the weekend nights sleeping on the floor with Charlie in a gated-in area of the bedroom, doing my best to comfort him with my presence. He, of course, would have been thrilled had I just licked his scar for a while.
Thank Goodness For TiVo
May 18, 2005 on 3:47 pm | In UncategorizedAs of this writing…
“The West Wing” is moving to Sundays, where it can compete against FOX’s lineup of a bunch of shows I watch, and ABC’s lineup of a bunch of shows I don’t watch. This will undoubtedly be its last season with that kind of competition. And the title of this post should probably be “Thank Goodness For TiVo and BitTorrent.”
“Scrubs” isn’t coming back in September, but rather being held off for a few extra months, because NBC is stupid.
“Boston Legal” jumps to Tuesdays, and “Lost” moves one hour earlier, to 9pm.
“Jack & Bobby” won’t make my TV watching schedule any more complicated, because it’s been cancelled.
“Gilmore Girls,” fresh off its best season, hasn’t yet been renewed. The WB is also stupid.
“Invasion” on ABC sounds promising, but obviously we’ll have to wait and see on that one.
“Malcolm in the Middle” is coming back. Can someone please explain why FOX airs it at 7:30pm? Is there any other major TV sitcom that shows before 8pm?
And, as previously mentioned here, the amazing “Arrested Development” has been picked up for a full order for next season. FOX, my friends, is not that stupid.
Work work work
May 14, 2005 on 11:30 pm | In UncategorizedHmm. The question posed is is this fair? The answer, not surprisingly, is no.

May 10, 2005 on 5:27 am | In UncategorizedCharlie had to go the vet tonight, for a problem that may be serious and may not be, involving the placement of his kneecap.
So, I don’t have time to write a recap of Lauren’s episode at the moment. If only someone did.
Queer Eye: Initial post-show post
May 9, 2005 on 3:25 am | In UncategorizedHahahaha.
That’s the first reaction.
We had fun watching, that’s for darn tootin’! I believe that my initial stance — “all they wanted to talk to me about was sex” — was fully validated.
And, my #1 goal — that they would describe me as hot — was fulfilled multiple times! Woohoo!
So, clearly, a factual representation of fact.
Lauren, of course, looked fabulous. I think I came off a bit nervous, for which I’ll never forgive myself. But the one clip I got in the interview segment on the white background — I was funny there, at least.
The videotape I tried to make in the second bedroom didn’t work out too well, but the TiVo’d version will do us just fine.
Queer Eye TONIGHT

Don’t miss it!
Recap and notes to be posted sometime after airing.
