Weird Al releases new parody single on the ‘net first

“Weird Al” Yankovic must be going nuts. He already finished recording 10 songs for his new forthcoming album, but what he terms “record label politics” has prevented the disc from being released just yet.

Al’s doing okay, though. He’s released one song off the new album online. Entitled “You’re Pitiful,” it parodies James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful.” And, in this humble reviewer’s opinion, the song should be required study in any course on the art of parody. The source material isn’t stellar — hence, it’s deserving of the parody send-up — but Al’s delivery, lyrics, and subject matter are all excellent. Like a fine wine he wouldn’t drink since he’s a teetotaler, Al truly improves with age; his lyrics and his voice seem to get better with each successive release.

The better you know Blunt’s version, the more intricate you realize Al’s truly is. And the more eagerly you await the new album. The New York Times leaked a few months back that Al would have a parody of “We Are the World” entitled “Don’t Download This Song.” Who can resist that?*

*Hint: Not me.
