Resolutions

January 1, 2008 on 7:00 am | In Life Updates

I don’t historically make New Year’s resolutions. If I want to make a life change, I prefer to try to implement it sooner rather than later; July 27th is as good a date to do so as January 1st in my book. (But not August 9th. August 9th is for wimps and Communists.) (I’m kidding. I think.)

So, while I think New Year’s resolutions are lame — since one can easily institute sweeping edicts for potential life improvement any day of the year… I do think there’s something to be said for public resolutions.

Much like public nudity, public resolutions demand some form of attention. For the average citizen, it’s so the public can laugh at you — in one case, for your laughably un-model like body, and in the other case, for failing to keep your resolutions by somewhere around January 3rd.

Recognizing that failure is not only an option, but also just two baby coughs on this side of “inevitable,” I will publicly share a few New Year’s resolutions here and now. I’ve given these all a lot of thought in the past several minutes.

1. To blog once per day. This one will be nearly impossible. As a father, husband, and full-time employee for a company where it’s always three hours ago (think: time zones), I find it hard to eat every day. I’m already accepting of the fact that I will almost assuredly fail at this resolution, but vowing to blog “an average of 3 times per week,” or “more than once per week” or whatever seemed more defeatist than aiming high. I want to blog more for one reason: To flex my writing muscle. Because my fingers are out of shape.

2. To write at least 12 songs. By my count, I wrote four songs this year that weren’t for work. I wrote another 15 or so for work, but that’s just not the same thing. I’d like to find the ability to prioritize my time so that I can write at least one song per month in 2008. This is another tough one, but it can be done.

3. To gain the power of invisibility. Believe it or not, I think this is the easiest one on the list. It’s my understanding that attempting to make one’s self temporarily invisible is just as doable whether one practices constantly or never. So even if I forget this goal, I’ll in theory be working on it equally hard.

Happy new year!
