The latest album from The Rev. Dr Richard Busby

My friend and colleague David Wong pointed me towards a new and delightful meme.

The first article title on this page is the name of your band.

The last four words of the very last quote on this page form the title of your album.

The third picture shown here is your album cover.

And thus I humbly present my hit album:

    1. So.. will your “album” have any original music? Or will they all be rip offs like your theme “inspired” by Inspector Gadget.. because you should look “inspiration” up in the dictionary. I think you meant to say, “I stole my song.. it’s the I.G theme”.
How can you possibly enter that into a Songwriting contest??

    2. Thanks for sharing your Song-Fu concerns with me.

I would 100% agree with your incredulity if I were trying to sneak anything past anyone with my “Hey It’s Lex Friedman” theme. Were I trying to pass the melodic core as entirely my own, and somehow hope I could sneak through a great hook and make everyone think that I had written it — then yes, I would agree, I would be a disgrace in this contest.

Instead, of course, I’m paying massive homage to the Inspector Gadget theme. I tweaked the melody, added a few small pieces, and placed all kinds of extra lyrics in the song. (The original contains “Inspector Gadget,” “Ooh-ooh,” and “Go, Gadget, Go!” as its sole lyrics.)

Let’s look again at the rules for the first round:

You must do a song in the style of a classic television show. Not only that, but this song is the theme for a fictional television show about yourself (or your band). By “classic television show” theme song, we mean the type of themes found in shows from the 1960’s - 1980’s (ie Gilligan’s Island, Cheers, The Fall Guy, Diff’rent Strokes,Welcome Back Kotter, Greatest American Hero, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, The Facts Of Life, Green Acres, Gimme A Break, The Monkees, etc.). Your theme songmust include both lyrics and music. It must run no shorter than 30 seconds, and no longer than one (1) minute.

I took a classic TV theme’s central hook, tweaked some notes, added some sections, added lyrics, and envisioned a show wherein I fight alien robots with my daughter and dog. (The daughter and dog — I currently have one of each — made reference to the fact that Gadget’s dog and daughter always saved his hide in the original animated series.) My song even mentions, “It’s a shame you don’t have ‘Gadget Arms,’ though.”

I gave my honest spin on this contest round, which was extremely specific in what it wanted. Sorry I didn’t get your vote!
